LONDON, UK, KOLKATA, INDIA. 19th of July, 2026 — Gold Mercury has announced the appointment of internationally acclaimed Indian filmmaker Goutam Ghose to the Gold Mercury Megavisionary Council, the organisation's principal governing body, bringing one of India's most distinguished cultural leaders into Gold Mercury's global leadership.
An internationally respected film director, screenwriter, cinematographer, producer and photographer, Goutam Ghose has spent more than five decades using cinema to explore the human condition, cultural identity, social justice and humanity's relationship with nature. His appointment reflects Gold Mercury's commitment to bringing together exceptional leaders from diverse disciplines to help shape humanity's future.
One of India's Most Celebrated Filmmakers
Born in Kolkata in 1950, Ghose began his filmmaking career in 1973 and has since become one of India's most internationally recognised cinematic voices. His distinguished body of work includes acclaimed feature films such as Maa Bhoomi, Paar, Antarjali Yatra, Padma Nadir Majhi, Moner Manush, Shankhachil and Raahgir, together with award-winning documentaries on subjects including Satyajit Ray, Ustad Bismillah Khan and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Throughout his remarkable career, Ghose has received 16 National Film Awards, numerous Filmfare Awards, and many of the world's most prestigious international film honours, including awards at Cannes, Venice, Nantes, Tashkent and the International Film Festival of India. He is also the only Indian filmmaker to receive Italy's prestigious Vittorio De Sica Award and, in 2006, was awarded the Knighthood of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity by the President of Italy.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to India's cultural life, Goutam Ghose was appointed Sheriff of Kolkata, one of the city's highest ceremonial honours. Appointed by the Governor of West Bengal, the Sheriff serves as the city's honorary civic leader, a historic office dating back to 1775. The distinction is reserved for eminent citizens who have made exceptional contributions to society, including leading figures from the arts, literature, public service and academia, reflecting Ghose's enduring influence on India's cultural and intellectual life.
