Goutam Ghose is one of India's most distinguished filmmakers and cultural visionaries. An internationally acclaimed film director, screenwriter, cinematographer, producer and photographer, he has devoted more than five decades to exploring the human condition through cinema, creating works that illuminate social justice, cultural identity, spirituality and humanity's relationship with nature.
Born in Calcutta (Kolkata), India, in 1950, Ghose graduated from Calcutta University before beginning his filmmaking career in 1973. He was actively involved in Calcutta's influential group theatre movement and worked as a photojournalist before turning to documentary filmmaking. His first documentary, New Earth, was followed by Hungry Autumn, which won the top prize at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, launching an extraordinary international career.
Since then, Ghose has directed a remarkable body of work comprising acclaimed feature films and documentaries that have earned worldwide recognition. His most celebrated films include Maa Bhoomi, Dakhal, Paar, Antarjali Yatra, Padma Nadir Majhi, Patang, Gudia, Dekha, Abar Aranye, Yatra, Kaalbela, Moner Manush, Shunyo Awnko, Shankhachil, Raahgir, Shomoyer Smritimala and Parikrama. His documentaries include Meeting a Milestone (on Ustad Bismillah Khan), Beyond the Himalayas, Land of Sand Dunes, Ray (on Satyajit Ray) and Impermanence, a documentary on His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Widely recognised as one of India's greatest cinematic auteurs, Ghose has received 16 National Film Awards, numerous Filmfare Awards, and many of the world's most prestigious international film honours, including awards at Cannes, Venice, Nantes, Tashkent, Verna, the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), and the UK Asian Film Festival in London. He remains the only Indian filmmaker to receive Italy's prestigious Vittorio De Sica Award, and in 2006 was awarded the Knighthood of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity by the President of Italy in recognition of his contribution to cinema and cultural exchange.
Beyond filmmaking, Ghose has played a significant role in promoting international cultural dialogue and cinematic excellence. As Founder andChairman of the Kolkata International Film Festival, one of Asia's leading film festivals, he has helped strengthen its position as a major international platform for artistic excellence, intercultural exchange and global creative collaboration. A gifted cinematographer, he has personally photographed nearly all of his films and has remained an accomplished photographer since his youth.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to India's cultural life, Goutam Ghose was appointed Sheriff of Kolkata, one of the city's highest ceremonial honours. Appointed by the Governor of West Bengal, the Sheriff serves as the city's honorary civic leader, a historic office dating back to 1775. The distinction is reserved for eminent citizens who have made exceptional contributions to society, including leading figures from the arts, literature, public service and academia, reflecting Ghose's enduring influence on India's cultural and intellectual life.
