Gold Mercury Award for Economic Development - A Legacy of Enterprise, Resilience, and Community

Gold Mercury International awarded Gaetano De Chellis, Founder of Alpino Liqueurs, the Gold Mercury Award for Economic Development, in recognition of a life dedicated to visionary entrepreneurship, cultural pride, and community upliftment.

In 1948, Gaetano left the alpine village of Pacentro, Italy, and emigrated to Australia in search of a better future for his family. Alone and undeterred by hardship, he spent four years working as a labourer before reuniting with his wife and children. By day, they cultivated a humble farm in Schofields; by night, Gaetano worked additional shifts, driven by duty and an unshakeable work ethic.

Beyond his own household, Gaetano became a pillar of the Italian migrant community. He opened his home to newcomers in need, offering shelter, support, and a sense of belonging. His generosity helped countless families find stability and dignity in a new land.

In the 1960s, he turned to his passion for winemaking and opened a wine and spirit merchant at the Schofields Shopping Centre. This modest start led to the founding of Alpino Liqueurs in 1972—his tribute to Italian tradition and craftsmanship. In 1977, Gaetano’s creations earned international acclaim at a global trade fair in Germany, where he won six gold medals and one silver. That same year, Alpino received the prestigious Gold Mercury Award, marking a pinnacle of excellence in global entrepreneurship.

Despite only completing a second-class education, Gaetano’s wisdom, integrity, and vision shaped not only a successful business, but a legacy of leadership and inspiration. His blend of cultures, deep community ties, and dedication to excellence left an indelible mark on those around him.

Gaetano De Chellis built far more than a business—he built a legacy of values-driven entrepreneurship that continues to inspire. Through this award, Gold Mercury International recognised his enduring contribution to economic progress, cultural continuity, and human advancement.
